Chandima Gomes, who is among the top 2% scientists in the world in energy research as per the Stanford University ratings, is a distinguished professor of high voltage engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa at present. He was a professor of electrical engineering at Universiti Putra Malaysia until 2018.

He is an expert in a wide spectrum of subjects including power and energy, lightning
protection, electromagnetic compatibility and environmental sciences. At present he is the Chair of ESKOM Power Plant Engineering Institute-HVAC and the Director of the Centre of Excellence in High Voltage Engineering at Wits University. He is a Chartered Engineer (UK); Professional Physicist (SA); Chartered Physicist (UK, SL); and Fellow of South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE). He is also the Chairman of the Energy Storage Chapter of SAIEE and pioneered in developing the “hydrogen-fueled smart village” concept in South Africa.
Chandima was the founder of the Centre for Electromagnetics and Lightning Protection
(CELP), Malaysia and the first Head of the Institute. He has held full-time/adjunct/visiting professorship and lectureship in physics, engineering and meteorology at universities based in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, USA, Australia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Zambia and Japan. He was an advisor to National Lightning Safety Institution (NLSI), USA, African Centers for Lightning and Electromagnetics (ACLENet) based in Uganda, South Asian Lightning Networks (SALNet), based in Nepal, Zambian Centre for Lightning Information Research (ZaCLIR), Bangladesh Lightning Awareness Centre (BLAC), Indian Lightning Awareness Centre (LARC) and several others. He is a member of the TC81 of IEC 62305 – Protection against lightning (representing South Africa and formerly Malaysia), SABS TC 0067/SC 06 –Electricity distribution systems and components: Installation, and WG SANS 10313 - Protection against lightning - Physical damage to structures and life hazards. Chandima was instrumental in developing research capacity and awareness platforms concerning Energy, lightning safety & protection in developing countries, especially in South and Southeast Asia, and Africa. Chandima obtained First Class Honors Degree (BSc) in Physics, University
of Colombo, Sri Lanka and PhD at Uppsala University, Sweden / University of Colombo. He is a highly rated scientist by NRF, South Africa. Chandima has published almost 400
international research publications that include over 150 journal publications, 225 conference publications and 25 books/book chapters. Chandima is one of the topmost consultants in lightning protection and electrical safety at global frontiers.
